Eight years ago, the old man told me a story that took my breath away. His name is Louie Zamperini, and from the day I first spoke to him, almost incomprehensibly dramatic life is my obsession.
It was a horse - the subject of my first book, Seabiscuit: An American Legend - which brings me to Louie. As I examined the Depression-era racehorse, I kept coming across the story of Louie, track star of the 1930s who experienced a remarkable odyssey in World War II. I only know a little about him then, but I could not shake him out of my mind. After I finished Seabiscuit, I tracked down Louie, call him and ask about his life. For the next hour, he had me transfixed.
